Is Madea On Her Way Out?

I am with you bruh. I bought both Madea Goes to Jail and Madeas Family reunion. Sadly the jokes in Madea Goes to Jail were in Madeas family reunion which shows he is running out of ideas. I saw Madea goes to jail in person at Morgan State's Murphy Fine Arts center and while the singing was great the plot was a little thin. I think he needs to take some time and go back to the drawing board. Why is it that he always has to quote Sophia from the Color Purple. It was funny the first few times but come on now. I think its great that the black community supports him but now that he has resources its time for him to up the ante and deliver. I refuse to believe that there are not other talented Christian writers that he can bring to the table to make his movies and shows better. Tyler its time to step up your game son and come up with some better material. I don't know if you watch his TV show House of Payne but while it has potential I don't see it lasting. I was disappointed my family name was on such a incomplete show. He needs more star power and better material....ie all that shucking, jiving and coonin. Not hating just my opinion.

I was just wondering for the 2cents worth, how many more can be made. But dude is a brilliant brother and has overcome a whole lot. If a man can put on a dress and be a 6'7 woman and still be considered matcho and state seeking wife and kids well, he can stretch it out I suppose.

Well, about 8 of us watched it together. All of us enjoyed it. Not too much on tv that regardless of belief or age, we can watch together (I have younger kids). I agree that there's always more to reach for. But I also agree that it is basically a ministry - intended to get you laughing and hold your attention long enough to teach a little something. That's not too deep, that's what it is. More would be great, if and when it comes, but my money wasn't wasted.

you know what I have to somewhat agree with you. Madea plays re always very funny to me but Madea goes to jail was kinda redundant. I love Madea. Don't get me wrong I think there all hilarious except for Meet the Browns. I do think Tyler Perry needs to get some new material. The whole color purple thing is kinda played out. But I really hope Tyler Perry can come up wit sum new material to keep the Madea Plays coming cause they r hilarious

I own all of the DVDs of the plays and both movieso I support the brotha. That being said I think that even in ministry people can get stagnant. I think he has gotten to that point. If he wanted to use Color Purplr quotes as arunnong joke in his plays there are plenty other ones...For example " I said Fine Wit Me" ...Until you do right by me everything you do is gonna fail" They could be endless because the movie is classic. I think the fact that we as a people support him that he in turn is charged with sewing into other talented writers who woul in turn better his product also. It would be a shame for what he has started to fall by the wayside because of him being satisfied and not stretching himself and just giving his fans the same ol' same ol' just because he knows we will support. Don't pimp us.

I totally agree. His themes and jokes are getting a bit trite. I just finished watching his television show "House of Payne" and it encompases the same hackneyed themes of his plays and movies. In addition to which, there exist no balance. I mean it is nice that he shares our local color, values, and customs with the world but he never presents these same elements through different lens. Educated, successful, and independent blacks are portrayed as being braggart and even pompous. Yet obnoxiousness and ignorance are portrayed as being aspects which make black southern folks, especially, so lovable, so approachable, so soulful, and dare I say... real. To answer your question though, I don't think that the level of one's formal education should necessarily validate or invalidate anyone's interest in anything... even Tyler Perry's plays, movies, and tv shows. People enjoy what they enjoy. To even ask if educated people should find his work enjoyable seems like elitist babble. Rather than further entertain such kind of talk, I would say that as Beings imprisoned to reasoning, we must ask ourselves if Tyler Perry's work is meritable and is it worthy of our attention? Does his work represent growth or stagnancy? If not, then, we, be it college educated or not, need to ban together and encourage our soul brother to rise to the occassion. Craig we must let our education humble us rather than broaden the line of division between the educated and the miseducated.

If the above comment is for me, let me extend my sincerest apology to you. Perhaps I offended you. Straightforwardly though, I never called you an elitist. I said that the question SOUNDS like elitist babble. I never said that you thought that you were better than anyone. I don't know you like that to make that kind of judgement. However, what I do know is that that the question conotes that college graduates and or students have more refined interest than the lamen. It connotes that we are "suppose" to enjoy a form of entertainment that is different from people who weren't formally educated. Hands down that's alluding to elitist agendas. Once again, though, I apologize for offending you. Truly it was not my intention. More importantly though, I didn't mean to make you feel like I was judging you. I was simply judging the question.
