National Grandparents Day is on September 7th, 2025, and it’s the perfect moment to celebrate not just timeless music, but enduring legacies—those passed down through song, story, and service. Bill Withers’ cherished song ‘Grandma’s Hands’ was transformed into a deeply moving children's book by his wife, Marcia Withers, and daughter, Kori Withers, and released in July of 2023.
As we celebrate our grandparents, the story of ‘Grandma’s Hands’ reminds us that legacy is built both in moments of personal love and in how we continue to uplift others. Bill Withers’ simple, heartfelt tribute to his grandmother becomes a universal tale through vivid illustration. Kori and Marcia Withers carry forward his mission—not just in art but by fostering creativity, giving back to the community.
"Community, and nurturing future storytellers and songwriters through their charity works."
Originally released in 1971 on his debut album Just as I Am, “Grandma’s Hands” resonated deeply as an ode to Bill Withers’s grandmother—her comforting presence, gentle correction, and the lasting influence of her care. The single climbed to No. 18 on the Best Selling Soul Singles chart and No. 42 on the Billboard Hot 100.
This children’s book is more than art—it’s a tribute. It “celebrates the love, wisdom, and strength of grandmothers everywhere,” bringing to life the feeling of comfort and guidance that “Grandma’s Hands” conveys so beautifully.
In 2023, under the guidance of Marcia and Kori Withers, the song was faithfully reimagined as a vibrant, 32-page children’s picture book. Illustrated by multiple award-winning artist R. Gregory Christie, the book brings the lyrics to life, evoking warmth, memory, and unconditional love through rich visuals. It’s a tender, visual narrative that taps into the universal bond between grandparents and grandchildren.
A Legacy Carried Forward Through Performance and Service
The Withers family not only published the book — they've kept Bill’s values alive through community engagement and music. Kori Withers, a singer-songwriter in her own right, has been carrying forward her father’s melodious and compassionate spirit. She’s performed his songs at events such as a recent concert benefiting FreeHorse Arts, a nonprofit offering equine-assisted programs for individuals with diverse disabilities—a cause reflecting Bill Withers’ lifelong empathy and Kori’s own connection to restorative community initiatives.
Her work with FreeHorse Arts runs deeper as she serves on its board, honoring the bond with nature that shaped her father’s inner life. In addition, Marcia and Kori established a Bill Withers Scholarship via the Songwriters Hall of Fame, supporting emerging songwriters whose work embodies the soul and eloquence of Bill’s music.
A book, a performance, a scholarship—this is how love endures. Happy Grandparents’ Day everywhere!
