Unveiling Jack Johnson’s Lost 1910 Recording: The Voice that Reveals the Fight of the Century (555 hits)

The ‘Historic 1910 Recording of Jack Johnson’s Voice Unveiled by The Freeman Institute® Foundation’ under the leadership of Dr. Joel A. Freeman, has announced the discovery and public release of a 1910 audio recording of legendary boxer Jack Johnson. This exclusive artifact features Johnson recounting his monumental victory in the "Fight of the Century" against James Jeffries.

The recording, made just 20 days after the fight on July 4th, 1910, captures Johnson’s reflections on the all-important 15th round, where he cemented his place in history as the first Black heavyweight boxing champion of the world. This moment transcended sports, challenging deeply ingrained societal norms of the era.

Dr. Freeman, a noted historian and founder of the renowned Freeman Institute® Black History collection, has meticulously restored the audio using advanced artificial intelligence, ensuring the public can experience Johnson’s words in unprecedented clarity. The announcement marks the first time in 115 years that this recording from the original test pressing will be shared widely, timed to coincide with Black History Month.

The Story Behind the Recording

This one-of-a-kind test pressing recording is a Columbia Phonograph Co. 78 rpm test pressing, weighing one pound, and is believed to be the only surviving record of Jack’s thoughts about the 5th to the 15th rounds worldwide. Dr. Freeman acquired the artifact from a British antiquarian record dealer, along with documentation and correspondence from notable collectors who verified its rarity, provenance, and significance.

In the recording, Johnson reveals the strategy behind his decisive victory over Jeffries, describing how he systematically dismantled his opponent’s strengths while leveraging his own physical, mental, and spiritual preparation. His 10-point “war strategy” offers timeless lessons in resilience, adaptability, and focus.

“Jack Johnson’s voice, preserved in this artifact, offers a rare and intimate glimpse into his brilliance—not just as a boxer but as a thinker and strategist,” said Dr. Freeman.
