Actress and Educator Tonea Stewart will take part in the 2023 JXN Film Festival July 23 through the 28th as a guest panelist to talk about what she has been most famously known for in a career that has spanned nearly 50 years since her first performance in 1976 on screen in a TV movie called Nightmare in Badham County.
As a celebrated actor and educator, Ms. Stewart may be best remembered as Etta Kibbe on the popular long running TV series In The Heat of the Night or as Samuel L. Jackson's ride or die wife Gwen Hailey in the drama thriller A Time To Kill, and most recently with appearances in Girl's Trip, Rap Sh^t, Black Adam, and a memorable lead performance in the award winning film short, Doretha's Blues.
As the former Dean of the College of Visual & Performing Arts at Alabama State University in Montgomery, AL., Ms. Stewart served as administrator over the Departments of Art, Music, and Theatre. She also served as a professor, role model, motivator, and mentor to the students. During her tenure at ASU, the number of Theatre majors, minors, and the number of graduates from the Department of Theatre Arts have soared. Over seventy-five percent of the ASU theatre graduates have received full scholarships to major graduate universities
With all of her "Hollywood" success, Tonea Stewart has remained in the South as an advocate for Arts education, mentoring hundreds of young people with her Summer camps, and supporting community arts activist such as the team of the JXN Film Festival and raising awareness on the importance for local, state, and federal governments to raise the bar on funding the arts as a proven source for youth to continue their education and grow self esteem and confidence to succeed in whatever career endeavor they choose in their lives.
This is very much in keeping with the JXN Film Festival organizers who started the annual festival in 2020. The festival celebrates independent filmmaking and provides educational training in the field with industry professionals, masterclasses, and community outreach. We are committed to educate, entertain, and help emerging artists elevate their art.
