Support Black Film-See "Akeelah.." This Weekend!

I generally like to see Black Folks working. Working in Hollywood I know how rough it can be on Black Folks in the industry, let alone actors and actresses. GO SEE "AKEELAH AND THE BEE" THIS WEEKEND!!!

IT HAS TO BE THIS WEEKEND!! The reason is simple movie industry economics: Movie studios get to keep 80% of the box office ticket sales on opening weekend ONLY. This opening weekend gauges how much of a draw this movie or this type of movie was and whether subsequent movies in this vein will be made in the future.

Black movies are for the most part seen as financial losers by Hollywood. Unless it is comedy of some sort, the thought is that Black people will not go out to see it, and therefore the movie does not warrant being made. If the movie is shown to be a winner (somewhere in the top 2 movies released that weekend) then it makes it a little easier when another quality project comes around.

Bottom line, we all want quality, black oriented films that step outside of just the comedy genre. This film fits that standard. Please go and see it this weekend and encourage everyone you know to see it THIS WEEKEND and to see it again if necessary. The alternative is that Hollywood will continuously stifle the quality Black films that could be made by constantly referring to "Soul Plane."

I saw the previews to the movie. I think it's great because anyone from different ethical backgrounds can relate to the story. However, I did not like how some critics were with their comments on the film. They need to get the race card out of their minds.
