Savannah State University’s (SSU) Jesas Jean-Louise and Symone Ford will be interns at AshBritt Environmental July 2019. The internships are competitive paid positions open to all majors and recent graduates of SSU. Jean-Louise is a rising senior homeland security and emergency management major. Ford is a May 2019 graduate of the business management program. They will engage in ongoing AshBritt operations on the Florida Panhandle, which is still recovering from Hurricane Michael.
The internship experiences are the outcome of a new collaboration between SSU and AshBritt Environmental designed to expose students to career opportunities within the environmental field, particularly those relevant to disaster recovery and debris management.
In February 2019, the firm hosted 10 SSU undergraduates from diverse majors and Carol Pride, Ph.D., professor and chair of marine and environmental sciences at SSU, in a tour of their post-storm operations sites near Panama City, Fla.
The group visited operational sites where vegetative debris was being shredded and a waterway debris removal site at the Pitt and Sylvan Springs recreational area. In addition to viewing active cleanup sites, SSU met with local school administrators to discuss the everyday challenges of housing, mental health, lack of staff, low supplies and long-lasting damage.
Established in 1890, Savannah State University is the oldest public historically black college or university in Georgia and the oldest institution of higher learning in the city of Savannah. The university's 4,100 students select majors from 30 undergraduate and six graduate programs in four colleges - Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Business Administration, Sciences and Technology, and Education.
