Savannah State Universityfs (SSU) Jordan Rutland '18 will serve as a John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellow in Washington, D.C. The prestigious and highly competitive position will allow Rutland and other fellows to apply their ocean science and communication skills in the executive and legislative branches of the federal government.
Rutland completed her master's thesis on gLife history indices of female common bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus in waters near Savannah, Georgia,h last spring in the SSU dolphin science lab with Tara Cox, Ph.D.

Rutland is the third SSU student to serve as a fellow, following in the footsteps of Sanya Compton and Shelly Krueger.
Savannah Statefs marine sciences program, founded in 1979, is the located on rich coastal habitats and ecosystems, including a maritime live oak forest and the salt marsh estuary. The variety of plants and animals found in these habitats provide a natural laboratory for instruction and research. Today, 81% of the nationfs African-American marine sciences masterfs degree recipients come from SSU.
Established in 1890, Savannah State University is the oldest public historically black college or university in Georgia and the oldest institution of higher learning in the city of Savannah. The university's 4,500 students select majors from 30 undergraduate and six graduate programs in four colleges ] Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Business Administration, Sciences and Technology, and Education.
