North Carolina Central University has named Jennifer Schum, Ph.D., interim dean of University College.
In this role, Schum will provide leadership in Academic Advising, Academic Counseling Services, UNIV 1100, the Office of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services, Supplemental Instruction and Tutoring, University Testing, and the Writing Studio. She will also be responsible for ensuring the continued successful implementation of NCCU’s Student Support Services Program and the Aspiring Eagles Academy Summer Bridge Program. Most importantly, she will lead the charge in NCCU’s first-year student retention and student success efforts. Dr. Schum will report to the senior associate vice chancellor for Enrollment Management.
Schum joined NCCU in 2012 as the associate dean of University College. Prior to her arrival at NCCU, Schum served as associate director of Academic and Career Planning at Meredith College, where she led successful faculty advisor development efforts and support programs for adult students, among other responsibilities. She also held faculty and administrative appointments, including developmental advisor and student life coordinator at Bellarmine University in Louisville. Schum also has extensive experience in counseling and rehabilitation.
Schum’s accomplishments include several scholarly publications and presentations. She is an active member of a number of associations including the American College Personnel Association, National Academic Advising Association and the Southern Association of College Student Affairs, among others.
Schum graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from James Madison University. She holds a master’s in Clinical Psychology from Spalding University. She also earned both a Masters of Education and Ph.D. in Counseling and Professional Services from the University of Louisville.
