Texas Southern University heads to NCAA baseball tournament (1197 hits)

Texas Southern University Tigers have been selected as the #4 seed in the 2018 NCAA Baseball Tournament. TSU will face the Texas Longhorns, seeded #1 in the tournament’s regional match-up, on Friday, June 1 at 8:00 p.m. CDT in Austin. The game will be broadcast live on the Longhorn Network.

Texas Southern, with a 27-26 overall record and solid regional experience, captured its second consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball title on May 20 with an 18-3 win over Grambling State. The Tigers had a strong showing in the SWAC Tournament through SWAC Player of the Year Kamren Dukes and SWAC Pitcher of the Year Aaron Solis. The Tigers are posting their third NCAA tournament appearance in four seasons.

“The University community is proud of our Tigers and their invitation to this prestigious baseball tournament,” said TSU President Dr. Austin A. Lane. “TSU’s student-athletes are among the best in the nation and our campus is looking forward to a successful campaign in Austin on Friday.”

NCAA’s Austin Regional has a double-elimination format, with the opening contest winner advancing in the tournament bracket and the loser getting a one-game chance to stay alive in the competition.

“Texas Southern supports every step that our baseball team is taking toward a fruitful campaign in the NCAA Tournament. This program has been tested and delivered critical wins when challenged on the diamond,” said Dr. Charles McClelland, vice president of athletics.
