Texas College Celebrates 124th Anniversary (1273 hits)

On January 9, 2018, Texas College, the oldest institution of higher education in Tyler, will celebrate her 124th anniversary. To commemorate the event, the College will host a celebration on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 2:00 PM in the Cafeteria located on the Texas College campus.

Brief History
In the spring of 1894, a group of ministers affiliated with the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church responded to the visionary leading of the Holy Spirit and founded what is known today as Texas College. This founding represented the birth of an educational opportunity for a group of disenfranchised individuals in the city of Tyler located in the East Texas area.

The original charter, issued July 1, 1907, declared Texas College an official educational institution. Operating under the supervision, care, and ownership of the CME Church in America, Texas College began to take flight as a Christ-centered institute designed to provide an education in a Christian environment for youth (males and females), equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to advance and excel above the norm. Offering studies in all branches of literacy: scientific and classical education, training of teachers, music, commercial and industrial training, and agricultural and mechanical sciences. The study of theology was and remains a mandated course for all students.

Today, Texas College is a liberal arts college that upholds its founding Christian principles as she remains open to all individuals without discrimination on the grounds of national origin, race, religion, or s*x who are in pursuit of an education. There are 14 degrees offered by four divisions: Division of Business and Social Sciences, Division of Computational and Natural Sciences, Division of Educations, and the Division of General Studies and Humanities.

Founders’ Convocation
A formal commemoration of Texas College’s founding will be held on Friday, March 16, 2018 during the annual Founders’ Convocation. This event is free and open to the public.
