B-CU Student and NASPA Fellow, Derenzo Thomas, Teaches Diversity and Inclusion (5419 hits)

Derenzo Thomas, a junior Psychology major at Bethune-Cookman University, has been granted the opportunity to co-lecture at Florida State University. Thomas is eager to begin teaching a Diversity and Inclusion course alongside Shane Whittington, the Social Justice Coordinator for the Center of Leadership and Social Change at FSU. Thomas was selected to participate in the 2017-2018 class of the NASPA Undergraduate Fellowship Program (NUFP NASAP) as a student fellow, which led him to shadowing the Vice President of Student Affairs at the University of Georgia, Victor Wilson.

“When Vice President Wilson heard I was conducting my own research on the mental health of African American males, he felt it was time for me to gain lecture exposure,” said Thomas. Thomas led by his mentor Kaamil Al-Hassan who helped him find a professor to apprentice with.

Thomas has been shadowing professors at a number of institutions for higher learning since this past September, and is eager to do whatever it takes to gain as much knowledge possible. He has visited the Office of Student Affairs at the University of Florida, the University of Georgia, and the University of South Florida.

Upon his graduation from B-CU, Thomas will work toward obtaining his master’s degree in higher education and aspires to become the Vice President of Student Affairs at the University of Georgia.
