Alcorn State University introduces paperless graduate clearance forms process (1531 hits)

The concerns of students at Alcorn State University have been heard.

The university has ended the paper-based clearance forms process. Beginning with seniors eligible to earn degrees at the fall 2017 commencement, graduates will be able to electronically clear the university and also remove any holds from their accounts that would prevent them from graduating.

Dr. Donzell Lee, executive vice president for Academic Affairs and provost, said the changes were motivated by students who voiced their concerns during the recent town hall meetings, where students presented President Alfred Rankins Jr. and senior leadership with ideas on improving student life at the university.

Lee added, “The university heard student voices from recent town hall listening sessions and deployed key personnel to make the students vision of a paperless clearance process a reality. We have received early positive feedback from students expressing joy in the impediment free path to graduation. We believe the new process will strengthen the commencement experience for graduates and their families.”

Dr. John Igwebuike, vice provost for the Office of Academic Affairs and Student Records, is proud of the technological strides the university is making to accommodate its students.

“We stand at a watershed moment in Alcorn’s digital revolution,” said Igwebuike. “The entire pre-commencement process, which includes application for degree, degree plan evaluation, graduation audit and approval and degree posting, is completely automated and fully digitized. This robust process is possible because of the leveraging of technology and digitization resurgence at Alcorn.”

According to Igwebuike, students with holds on their accounts should contact the office that placed the hold in order to have it removed.

Igwebuike concluded, “Some holds may require the student to simply complete a form, others may require the student to return an item, while others may require the student to pay a fine,” said Lee. “Therefore, removal of the hold depends on the reason for the hold. The reason will be provided when the student contacts the unit which placed the hold on the account.”
