Wiley College is host to the 2017 National HBCU Speech and Debate Championship Tournament in January 2018 (6634 hits)

Wiley College is set to host the 2017 National HBCU Speech and Debate Championship Tournament on January 26-27, 2018. Currently, there are 33 teams vying for the championship trophy so may the best debating team win!

Thank you to Coach Chris Medina of Wiley College for sharing this information.

As you may recall, Wiley College was the main location for the film The Great Debaters. The Great Debaters was a 2007 American biographical drama film directed by and starring Denzel Washington and included stars such as Forest Whitaker, Kimberly Elise, and Nate Parker.

Based on a true story, the plot revolves around the efforts of debate coach Melvin B. Tolson (Denzel Washington) at Wiley College, a Historically Black College, to place his team on equal footing with whites in the American South during the 1930s, when Jim Crow laws were common and lynch mobs were a fear for blacks. In the movie, the Wiley team fights to succeed to the point where they are able to debate the perceived top debate team, Harvard University.
