Homecoming game day notifications for Alcorn State University Homecoming 2017 (1778 hits)

Alcorn State University looks forward to welcoming thousands of students, alumni and fans to Lorman on Saturday, October 14 for an exciting Homecoming game against SWAC rival Prairie View A&M Panthers. We know all the Braves faithful will be ready to cheer on our team and we can’t wait to see you! All campus guests are encouraged to note the following when entering campus and during the day’s festivities:

The annual homecoming parade is scheduled for 9 a.m. beginning on Alcorn Drive between Bowles Hall and E.E. Simmons Gymnasium. Parade participants should arrive to campus no later than 7:00 a.m. using the rear (north) campus entrance.

The game kick-off time is set at 2 p.m. on Saturday, at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium, Dwight Fisher Field. Gates open at 12 Noon. The Ticket and Will Call Office will open at 11:00 a.m. As a part of or continuing celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the stadium and field, the first 250 fans to enter the stadium will receive a free 25th Anniversary T-Shirt. A special presentation to the family of stadium namesake Jack Spinks, will take place during pre-game activities.

Tailgating
For the homecoming game, fans are being alerted that tailgate setup begins on the Thursday prior to the game (October 12) from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and all day on Friday prior to the game (October 13). Further, tailgaters must present and display a tailgate pass prior to being allowed to set up.

Team Walk to Stadium
Alcorn State University would like to announce the revival of an old tradition, “The Brave Walk”, to the team’s arrival at Spinks-Casem Stadium for home games. About two and one-half hours before kick-off (11:30 a.m.), the Alcorn Braves football team will begin it’s walk to the stadium after de-boarding their buses at the entrance of K.L. Simmons Industrial Technology (I.T.) Building on Alcorn Drive. Fans and alumni are asked to line up, in all their purple and gold spirit, forming a tunnel on either side of the sidewalk to welcome and cheer the coaches and players as the team walks single-file to the football stadium and the home locker room.

NCAA Rules Points of Emphasis – Game Length

This year, the NCAA football rules committee has made game length a national point of emphasis, as game times have crept up over three and a half hours the last several years. One point of emphasis this year, that has alumni, fans and HBCU athletic departments talking: halftime presentations.

The committee has decided to take "administrative steps" to shorten game lengths rather than change any rules. For halftime, referees have typically waited to start the 20-minute halftime clock until the teams are headed to their respective locker rooms and the head coach has finished his on-field interview. Now, officials are being instructed to start the 20-minute halftime countdown as soon as (immediately) the first half ends, per the language of the rule.

This point of emphasis poses a significant challenge to the traditional HBCU marching band performances and other special presentations. The SWAC conference has been granted a waiver for an extended halftime of five (5) minutes for “classic games” and “homecomings” only. Alcorn has moved all special presentations of sixty seconds or more to pre-game. The Conference Office has granted Alcorn a five-minute extension for our 2017 homecoming presentations.

Additionally, all other existing gameday rules and regulations are still in effect. Fans are also reminded to review the Fan Guide to prepare and enjoy a successful homecoming experience.

Please stay tuned to the University website and Athletics website for any other updates or changes.
