Central State University's Sheba Harris named HBCU Digest Female Coach of the Year (1595 hits)

Central State head women's basketball coach Sheba Harris was named HBCU Female Coach of the Year by HBCU Digest.

The accolade was announced Friday in Washington, D.C., during the HBCU Digest Awards Ceremony. Later that evening, the university was named the HBCU of the Year, a prestigious national honor that acknowledges the university's grown and elevated public impact at the state, national and international level.

Harris coached the Lady Marauders to their first SIAC West Division title since becoming an exclusive member of NCAA Div. II. On their way to the West Division crown, Harris and her team went on a 12-game winning streak. On Feb. 1, Harris earned her 100th career coaching victory. With a final record of 20-8 overall, Harris finished with a career best in wins and winning percentage for a single season. At the conclusion of the season, Harris was named the SIAC Coach of the Year.

"This award is a testament to the hard work of our coaching staff, players and staff assistants," Harris said. "I also want to thank the entire Central State community for continuing to support our program. I was honored to be nominated and was surprised when they announced my name as the winner."

In addition to capturing two awards, CSU representatives were nominated in six award categories.

Football player Aliou Diouf was a nominee for HBCU Male Athlete of the Year. Track & Field star Juan Scott was in consideration for HBCU Male Athlete of the Year and the Lady Marauder basketball team was among four teams considered for HBCU Female Athletic Team of the Year.

President Cynthia Jackson-Hammond, who won 2016 HBCU Female President of the Year, was up for the same award this year. Finalists were selected from more than 175 nominations from across the country. The awards celebrate excellence in a number of categories, including academics, student activities and athletics.
