It's Claflin! Columbia Student chooses Claflin (1622 hits)

Nidiyah Malkia-Elisa McDuffie, a graduating senior at Richland Northeast High School, has made her college decision. After 8 months of filing applications and 19 acceptance letters, Claflin University is her choice.

Although all the colleges and universities have her major and offered her merit scholarships, McDuffie chose Claflin because it appeared to be more family-orientated, with smaller classes and a student /teacher ratio of 15 to 1.

“At Claflin, I would be more then a number,” McDuffie said.

Claflin University is a Historically Black College or University located in Orangeburg, SC.

McDuffie has won numerous academic awards over the years. In middle school, she was named a South Carolina Junior Scholar, an elite group of students ranked in the top two percent of South Carolina students. Junior Scholars are chosen based on their high PSAT scores.

She also participated in the Columbia Urban League’s Project Ready Program. Project Ready is a signature program of the National Urban League that provides enhanced academic support to middle and high school students for post-secondary education success.

In high school, she was selected to join the National Society of High School Scholars, which recognizes top scholars who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship, and community commitment.

McDuffie also represented South Carolina as a delegate at the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in 2015, held in Boston, Massachusetts. The Congress of Future Medical Leaders is an honors-only program for high school students from across the country who want to become physicians or enter medical research fields. All attending students must have a 3.5 GPA or better to attend.

Nidiyah Malkia Elisa McDuffie is the daughter of Mosi McDuffie and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert McDuffie of Columbia.
