Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf to Address Cheyney University's Class of 2017 May 13 (1034 hits)

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf will bring the Keynote Address when Cheyney University’s Class of 2017 receives its long-awaited academic degrees on Saturday, May 13th on the University’s Historic Quadrangle. The 11 am ceremony will take place before an expected crowd of approximately two thousand persons. The Class of 1967, celebrating its 50th anniversary, will lead the graduates in the processional, in true Cheyney tradition.

“It is a huge honor for me to give the commencement address for Cheyney University's Class of 2017 – an accomplished group of young adults who are entering the work force at a critical time of growth in our economy," said Gov. Wolf. "I congratulate all of the graduates for reaching this important milestone in their lives, and look forward to wishing them the best of luck in person at this year’s commencement ceremony.”

The 47th Governor of the Keystone State, sworn into office two years ago, is focused on three simple goals: jobs that pay, schools that teach, and government that works. While the 162nd graduating class members will receive their hard-earned degrees, Gov. Wolf will be presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service.

"It is wonderful to know that this oldest Historically Black University, founded in 1837 and currently celebrating its 180th birthday, will add Governor Wolf to its list of great speakers," said Dr. Frank G. Pogue, Interim President of Cheyney. "His message to the graduating class, their parents and university guests will be timely, very encouraging and remembered for many years to come."
The late Edgar "Sonny" Harris '58, former professor for more than 30 years and champion for Cheyney, will receive a Doctorate of Pedagogy posthumously which his wife, Joan Harris, will accept. The dedicated mathematics education professor, committed student government advisor, and fiery faculty union president, motivated and required Cheyney students to strive for excellence in the classroom.

Rain or shine, the public is invited to witness undergraduate and graduate students receive their degrees at the nation's first HBCU (Historically Black College & University). Detailed parking, SEPTA bus route, and graduation information can be found on the commencement webpage and in the commencement handbook.

A liberal arts university, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania hosts signature programs such as the Keystone Honors Academy, the Aquaculture Research and Education Laboratory, and the accredited Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management program. Recognized as the nation’s 1st HBCU, Cheyney University has been educating students since 1837. The University offers baccalaureate and graduate degree programs at two locations, Cheyney and Philadelphia, PA – Center City. For more information, please visit the website at www.cheyney.edu.
