Baugh repeats as RRAC Coach of the Year (1839 hits)


TATUM, Texas – After leading the Wiley College men's and women's track and field teams to another Red River Athletic Conference Championship, Marlon Baugh was awarded men's and women's RRAC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Baugh had 10 return from the Wildcats' third-place NAIA Championship team last season – including the defending NAIA 100-meter dash champion Moriba Morain (JR/Pleasance Park, Trinidad ) and the defending NAIA 800-meter run champion Marbeq Edgar (JR/Choiseul, St. Lucia) and NAIA All-Americans Quinn-Lee Ralph (SR/Trinidad &Tobago) and Oraine Palmer (SO/Kingston, Jamaica). All four athletes won Red River Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week during the regular season. Morain and Edgar also won NAIA Track Athlete of the Week.

His new athletes also made an impact. Kimorie Shearman (FR/St. Vincent) won two RRAC Track Athlete of the Week awards and won NAIA Track Athlete of the Week on the last week of the regular season. Rajay Hamilton (JR/Jamaica) won the 400-meter dash at the RRAC Championship. Shevan Parks (FR/Jamaica) ran on the RRAC champion 4 x 800-meter relay team and Jose Garcia (FR/La Joya, Texas) ran on the RRAC Champion 4 x 400-meter relay.

The Wildcats have qualified for nine events in the NAIA Championship. The men have set seven records in Baugh's second season – 400-meter dash, 1,500-meter run, 5,000-meter run, 4 x 100-meter relay, 4 x 200-meter relay, 4 x 400-meter relay and 4 x 800-meter relay.

Baugh returned nine Lady Wildcats from their 13th place finish at last season's NAIA Championship – including NAIA All-Americans: Terrisa Mark, Danielle David, Chriss-Ann Thomas, Kenisha Arthur and Dianna Kirven. Natasha Poleon, who was unable to make last season's NAIA trip, won two NAIA Track Athletes of the Week and four RRAC Track Athlete of the Week awards.

New athletes have made an impact for the Lady Wildcats. Taishia Pryce won four RRAC Field Athlete of the Week awards. She was co-High Point Athlete at the RRAC Championship with 42 points. Renae Dennie is the first Wiley College women's track and field athlete that has competed in the hurdles and posted an NAIA qualifying time. Her best time is 14.16. Dennie has won both RRAC Track and Field Athletes of the Week. Leslie Bethea became the first Lady Wildcat to qualify for the NAIA Championship heptathlon. Shamona Hunt won RRAC Track Athlete of the Week in the final week of the regular season.

During Baugh's second season, the women have qualified for 10 events. The Lady Wildcats broke or set eight new records – 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles, 4 x 400-meter relay, long jump, triple jump and heptathlon.
