War Garden Dedication at Alabama State University: 100 Year Anniversary of World War I & Local Gardens (2804 hits)

War Garden Dedication - 100 Years to the Day!

WHEN: Thursday (April 13) at 11 a.m.
WHAT: Dedicate/plant a War Garden, 100 years to the day & recognizing the World War I Centennial.
WHERE: ASU's 'Green Garden.' Park in the ROTC lot/ASU's Carter Hill Rd. Gateway; across from Liberty Gas.

On Thursday, the public is invited to attend a very special event as we will mark a 100-year milestone, as Alabama State University students, staff and faculty dedicate and plant a "War Garden" on ASU's campus in tribute to those in Montgomery who did so 100 years ago and in recognition of the centennial commemoration of America's entry in to World War I, which is this month.

In World War I (The Great War), the American government gave the lions-share of its commercially raised vegetables and fruit to the soldiers who were fighting America's enemies in combat, but it was not enough. To support our troops, our nation's citizens planted, tended and harvested "War Gardens" (that were at their homes or in vacant lots) to feed our soldiers and thus, help win the war (the posters above are examples of that effort).

The newspaper article below is from the Montgomery Advertiser in 1917 and it gives a narrative of what was happening locally with "War Gardens." Please note that at that time, ASU was known as "The State Normal School."

Thursday's special event is supported by Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company (who provided the seeds that will be planted on Thursday) and ASU's Department of History and Political Science, which organized the event.
