Free admission to 7 pm lecture by world-renowned Poet/Teacher/Activist Sonia Sanchez on Wednesday, April 26 at 7:00 pm at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania

An Evening with world-renowned Poet/Teacher/Activist Sonia Sanchez will take place on Wednesday, April 26 at 7:00 pm at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. Hosted by Cheyney's prestigious Keystone Honors Academy (KHA), the 7:00 pm event is free and open to the public.
Tickets are available for a 5:30 pm VIP Reception in Carnegie Hall on the historic quadrangle on the suburban campus. Appetizers and wine will be provided at the VIP Reception where guests will get the opportunity to meet Sanchez and get a picture with her. Admission to the VIP Reception is $35 for the General Public, $30 for Cheyney's Campus Community, and $25 for Cheyney Alumni. Tickets are available via TicketLeap. All proceeds support scholarships for KHA students.

Tickets are not needed for entry to Sanchez's free 7 pm lecture which will take place in Marian Anderson Music Center Auditorium. However, guests--especially large groups--should plan to arrive early for seating.

Sanchez, the author of over 20 books including Homecoming, We a BaddDDD People, Love Poems, I’ve Been a Woman, A Sound Investment and Other Stories, Homegirls and Handgrenades, Under a Soprano Sky, Wounded in the House of a Friend, Does Your House Have Lions?, Like the Singing Coming off the Drums, Shake Loose My Skin and Morning Haiku.

"It's an honor to host Sonia Sanchez on our campus," acknowledges Dr. Tara Kent, Associate Provost and former Dean of the Honors Academy. "As a highly accomplished African-American poet, she holds a treasured place in history through her outstanding contributions to the field, and for her role in the Black Arts Movement. She has authored over a dozen books of poetry, as well as short stories, critical essays, plays, and children's books. As the recipient of so many honors, including the Pew Fellowships in the Arts and the Robert Frost Medal for her poetry, we are so pleased to have her on campus, as she represents what honors seeks to achieve through an exemplary liberal arts education."

In addition to being a contributing editor to Black Scholar and The Journal of African Studies, Sanchez has edited an anthology, We Be Word Sorcerers: 25 Stories by Black Americans. BMA: The Sonia Sanchez Literary Review is the first African American Journal that discusses the work of Sonia Sanchez and the Black Arts Movement. A recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts, the Lucretia Mott Award for 1984, the Outstanding Arts Award from the Pennsylvania Coalition of 100 Black Women, the Community Service Award from the National Black Caucus of State Legislators, she is a winner of the 1985 American Book Award for Homegirls and Handgrenades, the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Humanities for 1988, the Peace and Freedom Award from Women International League for Peace and Freedom (W.I.L.P.F.) for 1989, a PEW Fellowship in the Arts for 1992-1993 and the recipient of Langston Hughes Poetry Award for 1999. Does Your House Have Lions? was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award.

While the 7 pm lecture is free, anyone can still donate to the cause online by clicking a box next to the line that says DONATE TO THE KEYSTONE HONORS ACADEMY. Every penny will benefit promising scholars with academic and career goals that might not be realized without financial support.

"The Keystone Honors Academy strives to provide the needed financial support to assist students in meeting the cost of their college education," shares Dr. Kent. "Because we are committed to serving talented students from all backgrounds, many of our students are first generation college educated, and from low income backgrounds. Without this support, many of our students would not have access to the education necessary to pursue educational and professional endeavors. Pennsylvania and the nation benefit from supporting all talented students, regardless of their financial circumstances."

While tickets are not necessary to gain entrance to the free 7 pm lecture, VIP tickets to the 5:30 pm reception can be purchased online.
