Morgan Partners with Verizon to Provide Experiential Learning Opportunities for Students (1546 hits)

In February, Morgan State University launched a new, innovative program aimed at providing undergraduate and graduate students at Morgan with technology-assisted, hands-on learning opportunities. Supported financially and technically by Verizon, the Expanding Student Experiential Learning program helps MSU scholars gain experience and develop much-needed skills to solve complex, real-world problems through the use of cutting-edge technology. The program, which has five phases — planning, training, implementation, testing, and demonstration — challenges students to develop products and services that have a positive social and/or environmental impact and enhance everyday life. Dr. Kofi Nyarko, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of the Engineering Visualization Research Laboratory at Morgan, will supervise the student participants through all phases of the project.

“The Verizon Student Experiential Learning program is designed to increase our students’ awareness of real-world, health-related problems and the solutions that can be realized through the careful application of the right technologies, as guided by our Verizon partners,” said Dr. Nyarko.

Working in small teams, students representing Morgan’s Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Science and Systems, and Business Administration departments are tasked with collaborating on projects centered on three potential themes: augmented reality, virtual reality (VR) or artificial intelligence (AI). Each team’s project will also emphasize a specific area of interest, such as educational technology, healthcare or assistive navigation. Additionally, students will have access to high-tech equipment, including the Microsoft HoloLens, Samsung Gear VR, Bluetooth hand controllers and the HTC Vive, a first-of-its-kind virtual reality system.

The addition of the Expanding Student Experiential Learning program expands the University’s relationship with Verizon and marks the second STEM-focused initiative on which the two have partnered. During the summer of 2015, Morgan and Verizon launched the Verizon Innovative Learning Program for Minority Males, previously known as the Verizon Minority Male Maker program.
