Junior cornerback William Isabell recently represented Central State University at the NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum in Phoenix.
Isabell was among 300 NCAA college athletes who attended the forum. Elected as the vice chair of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee earlier this year, Isabell was nominated to attend the forum by SIAC Assistant Commissioner Kelly McBryan.
At the annual forum, Isabell and his peers had the opportunity to learn about social media branding from LaChina Robinson, a former women’s college basketball player and current TV sports analyst, and engaged in better communication tactics with body language expert Justin Patton.
The forum is a collaboration between two NCAA national office staff groups: governance and leadership development. The curriculum is designed to identify differing leadership qualities and strategies while providing instruction in how to evaluate the differences and similarities across all sports, campuses and cultures. Leading the curriculum were 18 administrators and coaches selected by the membership. Topics covered throughout the forum included a focus on athlete identity, social justice and trust. The student-athletes were also able to interact with NCAA administrators and ask questions about current legislation and the future initiatives of college sports.
Isabell's experience at this year's forum was recently featured in Kyle Leach's article on NCAA.org.
