The Alabama State University Board of Trustees now has new leadership following action taken during its meeting on Friday.
In a 7-2 vote, the Board elected Trustee Ralph Ruggs as its new chairman. Trustee Angela McKenzie was elected as its vice chairwoman.
Ruggs joined the Board in August of 2014. A 1971 graduate of Alabama State University, Ruggs is the executive director of the Tuscaloosa Housing Authority and the former executive director of the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District.
McKenzie is vice president of accounting systems for Regions Bank, and was appointed to the Board in May of 2014. She graduated from ASU with a Bachelor of Science in accounting and is an active alumna who maintains strong ties with the University. She is a charter member of the Jefferson/Shelby County Area Metro Chapter of the ASU National Alumni Association and was one of the first members of the ASU giving program, which is called the 1867 Society.
Ruggs replaces Locy Baker, who had held the position since November of 2014. New leadership on the Board is elected every two years.
