Alabama State University's Free Saturday STEM Academy Connects Students with Hands-On Opportunity (732 hits)

Participants have until Friday, April 15, to register online

Alabama State University’s College of Science, Mathematics and Technology (CSMT) is hosting a Saturday STEM (science, mathematics, engineering and technology) Academy, which is a 'no-cost' opportunity for high and middle school students in the River Region/Black-Belt county area to get some 'hands-on' experience in the STEM areas of study.

Students who are interested in the STEM fields can be challenged while also exploring the fun side of science this Saturday from 8:45 a.m. to noon in ASU’s Life Science Building and it is all at no cost whatsoever!

The goal of the program is to promote STEM by providing hands-on activities and laboratory experiences, said ASU officials.

ASU professors and students will lead the local middle and high school student-participants in a day of fun and challenging scientific discovery.

Dr. Carl Pettis, associate dean of CSMT and chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, said CSMT aims to challenge the participants to think beyond the traditional boundaries of the classroom that they may be accustomed to and to see what doors a degree in a STEM discipline can unlock.
“Students should simply bring an open mind and a desire to explore and learn,” said Pettis. He said that students will participate in three scientific laboratory sessions.

There is no cost to attend the Academy, but preregistration is encouraged.

Participants have until Friday, April 15, to register online at www.alasu.edu/saturdaystem.
