The Alabama State University Theatre Presents the Greek Classic "Medea" by Euripides (1931 hits)

The ASU Theatre Presents the Greek Classic "Medea"
WHEN: April 6, through April 9, at 7 p.m.
WHERE: ASU's Leila Barlow Theatre; corner of S. Jackson & N. University.

Join us from April 6 through April 9, as the Alabama State University Theatre Department presents the classical Greek play "Medea," which is one of the most renowned of all of the classic canons and is written by Euripides.

It may have been written and first performed thousands of years ago, but its riveting story is ageless. It's all about a woman who is scorned and betrayed by her husband. ASU’s version not only honors the history of the play, but brings it to renewed life with stellar acting and hints of African mysticism.

The production will take place in the University's Leila Barlow Theatre.

MEDEA - THE PLOT
When Medea betrays her own family to save her husband Jason, she had no idea how her fortune would change several years later. She has borne him two sons and used her “dark art” to create a life of ease for her sons and husband. But in a quest for power, Jason has decided to cast Medea aside and marry a younger woman. Medea’s thirst for revenge sends her on a devastating and murderous rampage that will change all of their lives forever.

“I think this play is so relevant today because as individuals and as a society, we sometimes don’t stop to think about the consequences of our decisions and actions,” says Dr. Wendy R. Coleman, chair for the Department of Theatre and director of the production. “This play teaches us that not until it’s too late to undo things, do we regret that they’ve been done.”

Medea will showcase not only the dynamic directing and coaching of the performance faculty, but will also highlight lighting and sound design by students, and set and costume design by technical faculty members.

“As we create the ever-shifting realities of the play, the collaboration is powerful. I know our audience members will be mesmerized by the results,” Coleman added.
