At Alabama State University, Dr. Manoj K. Mishra is equipping his undergraduate students with cutting-edge techniques in molecular biology, which hopefully will impact cancer research in a big way - teaching students the scientific method and helping find cures for various forms of cancers.
Mishra, an acknowledged expert in cancer research (a specialty is prostate cancer) has been awarded a $17,000 grant (An LI-COR Biosciences’ Science Undergraduate Research Grant 'SURG'), which will go toward the purchase of an Odyssey® FC Imaging System, which helps with cancer research.
“This instrument will be used in our cancer research lab to help us document DNA gels, image ECL blots, and detect multiple targets on the same blot with two channel near-infrared fluorescence,” Mishra said. “We also will be able to capture clear, low-background images every time without adjusting camera settings.”
In addition to receiving the system, the grant includes equipment set-up, a computer and software installation and basic training on the operation of the system.
