She, he, me, we....are dying? Our people.

I am so sick to my stomach at the state many of our Black sisters and brothers are in today. And I am DEFINITELY not saying that Blacks need to get their act together, like Ray Nagin (New Orleans mayor re: Katrina,) Condeleezza Rice, Bill Cosby (still love him, just don't agree with some things he says). Whose fault it is is completely and absolutely arguable. HOWEVER, I hate that things have not changed since Martin Luther King. His dream is not reality to this day, if not getting worse. But on what I was thinking about --- we're watching a movie in Composition "Once Upon A Time, When We Were Colored." There was this scene in the movie just now (I'm at s chool) where blacks were, you know, out in the field plowing. The movie takes place in the 1960s in the south, to show that times hadn't changed. HOWEVER, during that movie, I saw one of our many black custodians walk past with a broom and some other tool. It was soooo symbolic - he looked like he could be in the movie. His clothes, his facial expression, his tools, working for this predominately white school. UGGGGH. I hate that....(That's why I'm studying AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES.) I love my people, hate to see them below others....

I know it can be discouraging, Kam. You are on the right path. Just keep furthering your education and if we each try to do our parts we can continue to move forward; even if it's just baby steps. Stay prayerful!!

You know how hard it is to remove a stain from something that you been cleaning for a long time. Like the tarnish on silver products. Think of God cleaning the silverware. Of course you will see the dirt first because it is coming off. But once it is gone, you will be able to see the silverware shine in all its glory. Everything will work out. Remember the story of Noah. God Bless.

I feel the same way. I mean, our people died and fought for a better tomorrow, and we're still living in yesterday? Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would probably turn over in his grave if he saw the lifestyle some of our people have choosen. We need to wake up and smell the coffee. Our people need to come back together with the same force and unity that the civil rights movement had and succeed. Our generation really needs to step up and speak out...we are tomorrow's leaders. I'm tired of seeing our people giving in to stereotypes and making excuses for why they aren't successful. In my eyes failure is not an option and I am determined to be great. Thanks for raising that question and actually writing something meaningful in your blog. Stay blessed. I'll see you at the top.

I agree with alot of what you said. Things are still bad. The only thing that has changed is that racism is not as obvious, as i learned after my stay at the Hampton University Leadership Institute. Racism has just become smarter. But i think the main thing that we can do to make things better is to remember the struggle and hard work that many before us went through so we can be where we are today. i am mixed and very much accepted by my community, where as 60 years ago it would have been much harder for me and my family. We all need to remember where we came from and look ahead to where we are going. We as people tend to forget what we did not experience first hand. We still have a long way to go! ~BrieBrie~
