Annual event welcomes alumni for week-long celebration (940 hits)


Savannah State University (SSU) will celebrate Homecoming Week from Sunday, October 11, to Sunday, October 18. Multiple events will take place on and near the campus. The week will be marked with music, lectures, networking events, a carnival, alumni gatherings and more. The celebratory theme, Legendary, is indicative of the university’s 125 years.

The inaugural Blue and Orange 5K will take place Friday, October 16, from 6–9 a.m. Runners are invited to join this fun run around campus that will begin and end at T. A. Wright Stadium. Registration is open at blueandorange5k.eventbrite.com. Proceeds will support scholarships.

Tee off with the annual homecoming golf classic on Friday, October 16, from 6:30 a.m. at Crosswinds Golf Course. Sign-up as an individual player or a get a group together and become a sponsor. Register at www.savannahstate.edu/homecoming/golf. Proceeds benefit the scholarship fund.

The Homecoming Parade will be on Saturday, October 17, at 9 a.m. in downtown Savannah. The grand marshals are Tony and Ruth Wright, alumni of SSU. Carolyn Vann Jordan, great-granddaughter of first president Richard R. Wright, Sr., will be the honorary marshal. More information at www.savannahstate.edu/homecoming/#/parade.

The parade will be followed by the football game at 2 p.m. against North Carolina Central University Eagles. Tickets are $15-$30 and are available for purchase at www.savannahstate.edu/homecoming/football. To enter the tailgating area, wristbands will be required. Wristbands are: included with a game ticket; included with a vendor/tailgate package; and are available for purchase at stadium ticket booths for $5 (free for children 6 and under).

Established in 1890, Savannah State University is the oldest public historically black college or university in Georgia and the oldest institution of higher learning in the city of Savannah.  The university’s 4,900 students select majors from 27 undergraduate and five graduate programs in three colleges — Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Business Administration and Sciences and Technology — and the School of Teacher Education.
