Bowie State Celebrates 150th Anniversary, Student Honors with Founders Day (819 hits)

A group of men dedicated to educating Maryland’s newly emancipated African Americans founded the school that would later become Bowie State University in 1865.

As Maryland’s oldest historically black university, Bowie State University will continue a yearlong celebration of its 150th anniversary at the Founders Day Convocation on Wednesday, April 15, with keynote speaker, Dr. Walter Kimbrough, the president of Dillard University known for his active use of social media to engage students. In 1865, the school that would later become Bowie State University was established by the Baltimore Association for the Moral and Education Improvement of Colored People to educate newly emancipated African Americans. The 46 men who formed the association opened dozens of schools for African Americans around Maryland after the state refused to do so.
