
Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (Md.-07), a longtime public servant and community advocate, will address about 625 Bowie State University graduates and their families
at the spring commencement on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 9 a.m. at the Xfinity Center in College Park, Md.
The commencement also
marks 150 years since the founding of Bowie State University as a school in Baltimore, Md. for the state’s newly emancipated African-Americans. With the commencement ceremony, the oldest historically black university in Maryland will continue a yearlong celebration of its 150-year anniversary, honoring the achievements of the new graduates and reflecting on the legacy of the school’s founders.
A Baltimore native and current resident, Congressman Cummings has dedicated his life of service to uplifting and empowering the people he is sworn to represent. He is especially committed to ensuring that our next generation has access to quality healthcare and education, clean air and water, and a strong economy defined by fiscal responsibility.
He serves as the ranking member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. In that role, he fights to hold the presidential administration to a high standard of excellence; helps ensure efficiency and effectiveness in the actions of the United States government; and identifies reforms that prevent waste, fraud and abuse.
He is also a senior member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, serving on the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation and the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials.
