Celebrating Black History by Highlighting Historically Black Colleges and Universities (949 hits)

HBCU Door Contest

The students and teachers at Nations Ford Elementary celebrated Black History Month with a school wide Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Door Contest during the month of February.  Each classroom teacher selected a HBCU to highlight and exhibit the research and creativity of their students that was displayed on their classroom doors.  Not only did the students decorate their doors with their findings, but they had to demonstrate knowledge of their selected college or university.

“This event was not only intended to share information with students regarding Black History, but to motivate and inspire our students to choose college as a long term goal as they prepare to become productive citizens in our society,” said Karol Dixon, Family Advocate and organizer of the contest.

There was a hush of silence over the school when the announcement of the winning classes began on Monday, March 2, 2015, and ended with shouts and cheers ringing through the halls when they found out the victors.  Congratulations to Mrs. Evans’ first grade class, whose door featured a 3D Winston Salem State Ram, and to Mrs. Robinson and her 5th grade students for a thorough exhibt of Coppin State University.  Each winner represented either the lower grades (grades Pre-K-2) and the upper grades (grades 3-5).

Nations Ford Elementary is a Title I Elementary School in Charlotte, NC with approximately 800 students ranging in grades from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. For more information about this school, please visit http://schools.cms.k12.nc.us/nationsfordES/
