Education is Number One Priority for Coach Walker
By Elliot Jones
GRAMBLING, LOUISIANA (December 18, 2014) Grambling State University Men’s Basketball Coach Shawn Walker Sr. is already taking his basketball team to higher heights off the court in his first season as head coach.
Winning basketball games is not just the only goal for Coach Walker. Academic performance is also important to the success of his program. As the Fall Semester closes and grades reported, players have already made a significant surge in their grade point averages. The majority of the GSU basketball team has a 3.0 or better grade point average. The rest of the players are within sight of the 3.0 average, which is a notable difference from this time last year.
According to Coach Walker, his aim was to revamp the basketball program by starting a grassroots foundation. One of his keys to success was to follow his students to class and to ensure that they performed once they were there. In addition, his once borderline students are now achieving on an average or above average basis. “My guys have met the challenge,” Coach Walker stated.
With all the success academically, Coach Walker still has an unyielding focus to have all of his players reach academic excellence.
