Four ASU Students Awarded Thurgood Marshall First Generation Scholarships! (1376 hits)

Four Alabama State University students were awarded Thurgood Marshall First Generation Scholarships Tuesday in a ceremony presided over by ASU President Gwendolyn E. Boyd in the Presidential Conference Room at Councill Hall.

ASU students Mercy Besong, Samira Chatman, Chelsea Jackson and Sandrille Miller (was unable to attend because of a class) were awarded the scholarships by President Boyd on behalf of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) and the Coca-Cola Foundation. The scholarship is awarded to students who are among the first in their families to attend college, as well as who meet the criteria for the prestigious honor.

During the ceremony, President Boyd congratulated the four recipients for working hard to reach their goal of attending college.

"Opportunity is indeed here at ASU and these student's stories are very compelling," Dr. Boyd said. "Like you (speaking to the scholarship winners) I was also the first in my family to attend college and I am living the dream right now that any student at ASU may achieve."

Dr. Boyd concluded by saying "There is so much potential in all four of these students...you are all game-changers, and with God on your side, you can do anything."
