Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. gives to the poor (926 hits)

The men of the Delta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. of Alcorn State University are on a mission to provide the less fortunate with their much-needed necessities.

The fraternity made the campus plaza their place of slumber last Thursday, November 6th, as part of their annual event, “DK goes Homeless, in an effort to raise money, food and clothing for the poor. The fraternity spent a day in the life of a homeless person to experience what it’s like to live without their daily needs. Students donated $300 and two carloads of non-perishable food items, clothes and toiletries to the cause.

The proceeds from the event were donated to Mountain of Faith Ministries in Vicksburg, Miss. Executive Director of the shelter Tina Hayward expressed how pleased she was with the fraternity’s willingness to give back to the community.

“The donation was an awesome blessing,” said Hayward. “I am very proud of the Alphas for the time they spent collecting items for the homeless.”

President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Scotty Dilworth was humbled by his experience living as a homeless person.

“We feel it is important to help the homeless,” said Dilworth. “The only way we would actually know how it felt to be homeless was to walk in their shoes. Sleeping on concrete in boxes, freezing from the cold weather and not knowing where your next meal was coming from was hard to experience and eye opening.”

Student Government Association President and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. member Zackeus Johnson saw the event as a chance to encourage the student body to look out for those who are struggling in life.

“This was an opportunity for us to give to the poor and inspire students to give and assist families who are less fortunate,” said Johnson. “I would say that our message to others would be that we are a chapter who looks out for our fraternity, institution of higher learning, but most of all, the community.”
