'Mumia Abu-Jamal of Philadelphia Pa., "An Award Winning Journalist who Chronicles The Human Condition." Speaks To College Graduates'

~"Whose Image is in Your, Mind?"~

PLAINFIELD, Vt. (AP) — In a story Oct. 5 about a man convicted of murdering a police officer giving a commencement speech at Vermont's Goddard College, The
Associated Press reported erroneously that Mumia Abu-Jamal gave his speech by video. Abu-Jamal's address was a pre-recorded telephone conversation that was broadcast along with a separate slide show.

Imprisoned former death-row inmate addresses a college graduation class. Mumia Abu-Jamal, convicted in police officer's death, speaks to graduating college class via a pre-recorded message. Mumia Abu-Jamal's remarks were played from a pre-recorded telephone call while a slide show played to about 20 students receiving
bachelor degrees from Goddard College in Plainfield.

He also earned a degree from the college in 1996.

"Think about the myriad of problems that beset this land and strive to make it better," Abu-Jamal said in the recording. He said his studies at Goddard allowed him to learn about important figures in distant lands.

"Goddard reawakened in me my love of learning," he said. "In my mind, I left death row."

The (non-proven former) 'Black Panther' and 'MOVE' Sympathizer did not address the crime for which he was convicted. He originally was sentenced to death for killing white police Officer Daniel Faulkner on Dec. 9, 1981, but he was resentenced to life in 2012. His claims are that he's been victimized by a racist justice system have attracted international support. A radio show, documentaries and books have helped publicize his case. Goddard College describes him as "An Award Winning Journalist who chronicles The Human Condition."

But the decision to allow Abu-Jamal to speak angered police and corrections officials in Vermont and Pennsylvania. The Vermont Troopers Association said it showed a disregard for the victim's family at a time when the nation is seeking solutions to gun violence.

"Wow, they want to end gun violence?" I thought.

Goddard, a low-residency school where students, staff and faculty spend eight days on campus twice a year, holds 20 commencement ceremonies every year, so students in each degree program can individualize their graduations and choose their speaker. The school, which has about 600 students, says the graduates chose Abu-Jamal as a way to "Engage and Think Radically and Critically."

Goddard students design their own curriculums with faculty advisers and do not take tests or receive grades.

~'No Game For Fools': “The Pulverization of Polarization In Politico”~

The posting boasted of how ‘Mumia Abu Jamal’ was supposed to have admitted his guilt in the shooting death of a Philadelphia Police Officer. This reporter, admittingly (conveying every sympathy to The Mrs., the Children, and family as well as to the family of Mr. Jamal), cannot help but wonder how the wife of the deceased cop, after remarrying, is able to continue campaigning for Jamal’s execution for more than thirty years. She has every right to do so, but what is the role of the new husband? Is he okay with his wife running around with a bunch of folks, who are dead set on Jamal’s guilt, and their rampaging efforts in demanding the imprisoned man’s death? It would seem improbable, though not impossible, that such a thing would be supported by the replacement…I should say second husband.

According to record, Mumia Abu Jamal has vehemently denied the murder and that the so-called witnesses have been tampered with including his missing brother. The case and accusations have all been tainted and diseased with cover up tactics and time. That particular piece of truth will never come to fruition or the light of day.

What has happened to the "Freedom of Speech Laws?" Can one not hear from convicted felons, justly condemned or not? What makes one who has killed different than one who has been convicted of killing? How many people convicted of 'cop-killing' have earned paroles after twenty-five years of imprisonment? What makes these officers hate this man more than any other convicted person who has been perceived as guilty in killing or shooting a cop? Why do some convicted felons get life sentences while others get twenty-five (sometimes shorter) to life? Why is the life of a police officer more important than the life of an average citizen?

Punishments and inquisitions were dealt severely and in many cases without regard for mercy or clemency.

“When law becomes a science and a system, it ceases to be justice. The errors, into which a blind devotion to principles of classification has led the common law, will be seen by observing how often the legislation has been obligated to come forward to restore the equity its scheme had lost.”

~"Crown of An Eagle, The Feet of A Chicken"~

One day a young Eagle fell off the nest and was picked up by a farmer. The farmer was kind enough to bring the small bird to his barnyard so that it would not perish.

The young eagle found a good home with the chickens and grew up believing he that he was a chicken also. He waited for the farmer to bring food, he clucked-cluck when a chicken laid an egg, and he enjoyed running around and sitting in a hole on the ground during sunny days. Life was good and comfortable, and the eagle’s wildest adventure was to run under the fence with his friends to that cliff where they looked at the mountains and wondered what was on the other side.

On another day he was with his fellow chickens picking seeds off the ground when a shadow covered the sky above him. He lifted his gaze and was mesmerized by the sight of a beautiful eagle cruising the sky. Unlike other chickens that he saw trying to fly, this eagle didn’t seem to be making much effort. With his wings spread wide, he was flying smoothly and changing his direction with the slightest gesture. “Wow. Look at that!”, yelled the young eagle to his friends. “Who is that?”, he asked.
“That’s an eagle”, replied one of the chickens. “He’s the King of the Sky. But we belong here on earth. We are chickens," she continued.

The soaring Eagle stared at the ground birds while disappearing in the horizon as if it was gliding on an invisible path that only he could see.

Days later, the Old Eagle was flying again over the barnyard and was stunned by the sight of an eagle running around with the chickens. He flew down to the ground in order to confront this ill-placed fowl. As the other birds saw him they ran back to hide in the house. He stood in front of the other eagle before he reached the door.

“What are you doing?”, asked the Old Eagle.

“What do you mean?”, answered the Young Eagle.

“What are you doing running around with these chickens, are you mad?”.

“I am a chicken. These are my brothers and sisters. I grew up with them.”

“No you’re not. You are an eagle. You belong in the sky, not on the ground.”

“No I am not. I am one of them. All I know is to do as they do, and to eat what they eat. I can’t even fly.”

“You can’t because you never tried. But you’re an Eagle, just like Me”.

“Even if what you say is true, I’ve lived all my life as a chicken. If I was an Eagle, I am not anymore!"

“It’s the heart of an Eagle that matters, not the way you've lived or ate… Come with me!”

The Eagle took another look at his friends hiding in the comfort of home. “Don’t listen to him!”, yelled one of the chickens.
“He is tricking you”,” said another. “ If you go with him, you will die! Come back and be with us!”

But deep inside the Eagle’s heart, a faint voice told him what he needed to do. He took one more gaze at the barnyard where he spent all of his life playing with his friends, then turned around and followed the Older Eagle.

A moment later, they arrived at the cliff he used to visit sometimes with his friends. They stood next to each other on the edge looking at the mountains in the distance.

Without a seconds' hesitation, the Old Eagle jumped off the edge, spread his wings and soared upward.

The Young Eagle looked down the cliff and trembled. He’d never flown before. Maybe he would die. Maybe he should go back.

“Don’t look down.”, the Old Eagle said. “Look up at the sky. Aim toward the sun. Give it a bit of Faith and Belief.”

The Young Eagle lifted his sight up, spread his wings and leaped…

Back at the barnyard, the chickens heard a triumphant cry that ascended to heaven. Their feather trembled and they looked at each other without exchanging a word.

They know they will miss their brother a lot. They know he might visit some day and tell them how it felt to fly. And they will gather around to hear his stories about the lands he visited. But for the time being, they would keep doing what they did best: living as chickens.
