Howard, Harvard clash in Great Debaters series
By Freedom Murphy and Rhea T Benn
Razor-like rhetoric will keep the audience on edge of their seats as Howard University team takes on rivals from Harvard University in a debate about legalization of marijuana. The battle of intellects will be on Wednesday, April 23, at 1 pm in Cramton Auditorium at Howard University.
The match up marks the second time a Harvard team has traveled to the Howard campus for a debate. The event is free and open to the public.
The debate team is a part of the MLK Junior Forensics program started years ago by Dr. Laura A. Fleet in the Department of Communications and Culture. The forensics program includes the debate team and mock trial team.
The Howard vs Harvard debate was inspired by two historic events of the past: the 1930s debate between Harvard and Wiley College, an HBCU in Texas, and the 2007 movie, the Great Debaters, featuring Denzel Washington and produced by Oprah.
