What is acting Black?

marcus s. · Tuesday, November 29th 2005 at 5:08PM · 154 views
I have my own opinion on this matter. Somebody please tell me what is acting black? How do you act a color? Do we confuse being black with being ghetto or Hip Hop? It offends me when someone of another race assumes all African Americans smoke weed, drink, and wear baggy clothes. Especially, since I don’t fall into any of these categories. Is it their ignorance or do we as African Americans contribute to this stereotype?

Ignorance play a big part in this matter. As Zina stated, people go by how blacks are portrayed in movies, rap songs, etc...and we as blacks want to imitate that stereotype. Not all of us act this way...society has "branded" us with that assumption. My opinion is, it all depends on how you carry yourself. If a black person wants to "act black", then they're feeding into a portrayal that society ignorantly acknowledges...sad to say. I've been accused of acting white...what is acting white?

Great question, awesome post.
We all have our multicultural personalities.
I say as long as one tries not to be what they are not and do not forget where they come from.
Like a Clarence Thomas for example and even he has his supporters.I find truth in all these comments and thanx for bring out what is a very important point.
