ASU is among the nation's oldest "state-sponsored" historic black colleges or universities (founded in 1867 by nine former slaves) and was instrumental in the birth of the modern Civil Rights Movement.
- Alumni from across the country have gathered to attend ASU's National Alumni Association’s 32nd Biennial Convention.

Alabama State University alumni from across the country have gathered in Washington, D.C., and will be there
through Sunday (July 18-21) to attend its nationwide convention, which will be held at Washington's Renaissance Hotel.

Hundreds of loyal ASU alumni from across the United States have arrived and will be busy discussing their alma mater and
its future, said Cromwell Handy, director of ASU's Alumni Relations.
“The National Alumni Association's (NAA) Convention is another opportunity for the alumni and friends of Hornet Nation to gather together to revitalize and to focus on its mission to promote and support the goals of Alabama State University,” Handy said.
The convention will feature several events, including an alumni reception, a lifetime members breakfast, leadership sessions and a
black & gold gala.

“This is a special time for alumni members and the staff of the University, as we begin a new partnership that will hopefully last
many years to come,” said Beatrice M. Forniss, NAA president.
