MEAC Announces Softball Weekly Honors (657 hits)

NORFOLK, Va. – Delaware State freshman Ashley Bennett earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week honors in softball, the conference announced on Monday. Teammates Stephanie Sarris and Sandy Hawthorne were named Pitcher of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.

Bennett (INF, 5-9, Fr., Delmar, Del.) batted .542 (13-for-24) with three home runs, three doubles, four runs scored, and nine RBI, along with one stolen base, to aid the Hornets to a 5-2 record last week. On the defensive end the rookie contributed with 23 putouts and one assist. Bennett batted .500 (2-for-4) with two home runs, three runs scored, three RBI, and one stolen base in a 10-1 win over Maryland Eastern Shore.

Sarris (P, 5-7, Jr., Rohnert Park, Calif.) posted a 0.43 ERA and struck out 24 batters for a 3-0 record on the week for the Lady Hornets. The junior pitched 5.0 scoreless innings and struck out eight batters in an 11-2 win over Coppin State.

Hawthorne (C, 5-5, Fr., Smithtown, N.Y.) went 14-for-26 (.538) from the plate with one triple, five doubles, six runs scored, and 12 RBI for the Lady Hornets last week. Defensively the freshman recorded 46 putouts and six assists. Hawthorne batted .750 (3-for-4) with one triple, one run scored, and one RBI in a 10-1 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore.

Other Top Performers

Kerissa Burruel (HAM) hit a perfect 3-for-3 (1.000) with a home run, two runs scored, and three RBI in a 10-1 win at Howard.

Cianna Burt (SCSU) went 3-for-8 (.333) with two RBI last week to help the Lady Bulldogs win the series, 2-1, over North Carolina Central.

Vianney Gomez (SCSU) pitched a complete game allowing five hits and striking out two in a 4-2 victory over North Carolina Central.

Jailynn Jackson (HAM) struck out six batters over 5.0 innings against Howard.

Mikala Johnson (SCSU) batted .333 (1-for-3) with one double in a 4-2 win over North Carolina Central.

Alina Moriarty (NSU) went 2-for-4 (.500) with one home run, two runs scored, and six RBI to aid the Spartans to a 17-7 win over Morgan State.

Diamond Ponds (HAM) batted .357 (5-for-14) with one triple, one double, four runs scored, and two RBI to aid the Lady Pirates to a 2-2 mark last week.

Stephanie Wheatley (NSU) recorded two doubles, two runs, and one RBI to lead the Lady Hawks to a 9-6 win over Norfolk State.

Whitney Williams (NSU) hit .667 (2-for-3) with three runs scored and two RBI in a 17-7 victory over the Lady Bears.
