Talladega College Board Chairman Named Hall of Fame Honoree (1495 hits)

Talladega College over its 145-year period has produced scholars who have impacted the world. In September, a national foundation will recognize the achievement of a Talladegan and grant him a Hall of Fame honor.

The newest honoree, Talladega College Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Harry Coaxum, will be among notable HBCU alumni including Kirk Whalum, multiple-Grammy winning jazz artist and songwriter, along with Shannon Sharpe, former NFL player and CBS sports commentator, and others. Dr. Coaxum will join the roster of nearly 20 new inductees to the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame.

In September, the new honorees will be inducted during an annual ceremony that serves to highlight and honor deserving HBCU graduates for distinguished service to their country, Alma Mater and for excelling in their fields. For over 20 years, the foundation has honored HBCU alumni in the fields of Arts & Entertainment, Athletics, Business and Industry, Community Service, Education, Faith and Theology, Government & Law, Medicine, Science and Lifetime Achievement.

“We are certainly proud of Chairman Coaxum and all he has achieved. He is a model Talladegan for our students, and his story is inspiring to many. Dr. Coaxum is a man from humble beginnings, but in his lifetime, he has achieved much. He is worthy of this prestigious recognition. This Hall of Fame honor not only reflects Dr. Coaxum, but it is a reflection of this institution, and our continued legacy of academic excellence,” remarks Talladega College President, Dr. Billy C. Hawkins.

Chairman Coaxum graduated from Talladega College in 1975 after earning a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. He completed course work at the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, and in 2012, he was bestowed a Doctor of Humane Letters from Talladega College. Last year, Dr. Coaxum retired from his position as a Vice President and General Manager with the McDonald’s corporation. There he provided strategic leadership for 790 restaurants that generated $1.9 billion annually in Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee. He has been featured in Dollars and Sense Magazine, Ebony Magazine, The Atlanta Tribune and more. He was inducted into the UNCF Alumni Hall of Fame and he is the recipient of numerous awards. In 2012, Dr. Coaxum received the inaugural Legacy of Leaders Alumnus of the Year Award from the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation.
