· Friday, November 11th 2005 at 10:43AM · 366 views
When Hampton University's women open their season today at Richmond (7 p.m.) in the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament, they will do so without guard Sharema Dean. Dean is no longer enrolled at Hampton and will not play for the Lady Pirates this season, athletic director Joe Taylor said recently.

Taylor said Dean decided not to return to school for personal reasons, but added she would have been academically ineligible to play during the first semester. Dean averaged 12.8 points and 4.4 rebounds as a freshman in 2003-04, when she was selected the MEAC Rookie of the Year and helped the Lady Pirates reach the NCAA tournament. Dean, a guard, averaged 9.7 points last season as a sophomore.
