Members of the 2012-13 Savannah State women's basketball team, along with the coaching staff and managers volunteered their time to the Savannah Salvation Army recently, by serving up more than just hoops.
The Lady Tigers served a hearty meal and drinks to over 100 for about two and half hours last Monday in Savannah.
"It was an amazing experience, because we got to help those that were less fortunate feel cared for and appreciated," SSU freshman Chantrell Frazier said. "Also, it gave the team a family feel, which has been our motto all year."
The meal was a part of the Salvation Army's free dinners offered every day. SSU served three different groups of people and were also placed in charge of the cleanup process afterwards.
"I see the needy every day around Savannah, and it brightened my day to help them out," Savannah native, and SSU junior Charmaine Greene said. "Everybody on the team was real cool and enjoyed making the people smile. It was a real bonding experience."
Both Greene and Frazier agreed they would like to do more community service projects in the future with the team.
Savannah's Montgomery Street Salvation Army operates the area's only 24 hour, 365-day a year emergency shelter for men, women and children. They serve nearly 100,000 meals each year.
