
Hampton, Va. - Former Hampton wide receiver Jerome Mathis, now with the Houston Texans, scored his first career touchdown in the National football League (NFL) on Sunday with an 89-yard kickoff return against the Indianapolis Colts. In addition, he also set a franchise record with 266 yards on seven kickoff returns, averaging 38 yards per return.
In his final season at Hampton (2004) Mathis led the country with a kickoff return average of 35.5 yards, as well as yards per reception at 29.8 yards after catching 29 passes for 864 yards and nine touchdowns. In addition, he set an I-AA record with five (5) kickoff returns for touchdowns. Also the two-time NCAA East Regional champion in the 200-meter dash, Mathis returned kickoffs of 91, 99, 92, 80 and 93 yards respectively ... the last coming during Hampton's first round playoff game against William & Mary where he accounted for a school record 394 all-purpose yards.
