Businesses, listen up! Florida A&M University's School of Journalism and Graphic Communication is issuing a challenge.
This week, it wants you to dig a little deeper in your pockets to help some special students.
The goal is to fund scholarships for those who couldn't return to the historically black colleges of Xavier, Dillard and Southern University in New Orleans and Baton Rouge because of Hurricane Katrina. (At least six of those students are now enrolled in FAMU's journalism school.)
Last week, students attempted to raise at least $2,000 on campus. As of Thursday, they had raised more than $700 from fellow students.
This Friday, they're handing the money to radio personality Tom Joyner of the Tom Joyner Morning Show to go to his HBCU (Historical Black Colleges and Universities) Scholarship Relief fund. Joyner is bringing his famed syndicated "Sky Show" to the Civic Center from 6 to 10 a.m. to be aired live. (Locally, 96.1 will air the show, and businesses giving money will have their names mentioned.)
Interested businesses or individuals should make their checks payable to the Tom Joyner Foundation. Details: 599-3379.
