NEW Development: Spelman to Receive $600,000 from Mellon Foundation to Support Hurricane Relief Efforts
A Message from President Beverly Daniel Tatum
On behalf of the entire Spelman community, I want to express my deepest sympathy to those who have suffered tremendous personal losses in those areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina. It is hard to watch the news or listen to the radio and hear about the suffering that is taking place in the affected areas, knowing that there are students, employees and alumnae who may be worried about loved ones whom they have not been able to reach, and others who are grieving the loss of family members, homes and livelihoods.
At Spelman College, we want to do whatever we can to support our students and employees at this difficult time. Several concrete steps have been taken to respond to this emergency. Please visit the following link to review a list of resources available to assist students and employees in need:
http://www.spelman.edu/about_us/news/hurri... In addition, we have received many inquiries from students enrolled at Dillard or Xavier University who are seeking “guest student” status at Spelman and we are working to accommodate as many of these students as we can.
We know that many of our students from the affected areas will have serious financial hardships due to family loss of income. For those who would like to provide assistance to these needy students, we have established the Spelman College Hurricane Katrina Emergency Scholarship Fund. Any donations to the Scholarship Fund should be forwarded to the Office of Institutional Advancement (Rockefeller Hall, 2nd Floor, Suite 200 or Campus Box 1551). Gifts can be made by cash or check. Checks should be made payable to Spelman College with "Hurricane Katrina Emergency Fund" indicated on the memo line. Gifts can also be made with Visa, MasterCard or American Express online at:
https://princess.spelman.edu/Donation.nsf/... Thank you to all who have offered assistance, prayers and words of comfort at this time of need.

"We are committed to insuring that the experience of our displaced students is a positive one. We are setting up tutoring services so students can get caught up with their classes quickly, and counseling services for those who are still experiencing emotional distress. In addition, we are providing scholarship support to displaced students based on need and availability of scholarship funds."
