Atlanta Resident Receives Academic Scholarship
ATLANTA (Sept. 26, 2005) –(BLACK PR WIRE) Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc. has named Atlanta resident Nafeesa Muhammad as the first scholarship recipient of the Cracker Barrel Endowed Heritage Scholars program at Spelman College.
Muhammad, a Spelman College junior, has received a $5,000 academic scholarship and plaque from Cracker Barrel Old Country Store®. The contribution is part of a $250,000 donation the Company made to the Atlanta-based historically Black college in support of academic scholarships. Muhammad will receive additional financial support of $5,000 per year, over the next two years, until her graduation in 2007.
“We are proud to support Nafeesa’s academic endeavors at Spelman College,” said Cy Taylor, president of Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc., during a visit to the school today. “Nafeesa and Cracker Barrel both value a rich foundation of history and heritage. We’re also excited about her desire to become a teacher because it matches our commitment to youth and education. She is an excellent student and much-deserving of this scholarship.”
Established in October 2004, the Cracker Barrel Endowed Heritage Scholars program reinforces the company’s commitment to developing future leaders. The program is designed to inspire young people of color to value and explore their history. Muhammad was selected based on grade point average and financial need as well as an application and essay process. She is a 2003 graduate of Benjamin Mays High School and the daughter of Jeanette Muhammad.
The Cracker Barrel Endowed Heritage Scholars program at Spelman College is open to history majors who maintain a 3.0 minimum grade point average and have a financial need. One new scholarship recipient will be selected each year. Students can learn more information about the scholarship program by contacting Spelman’s history department. Applications for the 2006-2007 school year will be available in March 2006.
