HBCUConnect.com is dedicated to promoting and supporting HBCUs around the nation. One of our HBCUConnect.com members, Amanda Lewis, a single mother, attending Alabama State University recently submitted this comment on Historically Black Colleges and Universities:
"Stand up for your HBCU!!"
'I love attending ASU. I have always wanted to go to an HBCU, even though people give them a bad reputation. But, you have to wonder where do the sterotypes come from? For, example, most people think that nothing at an HBCU starts on time. This is not true. The events, such as convocations, that were held at ASU started on time, everytime. Another thing that people assume is that the course loads at black colleges are not challenging. America still has the idea that black citizens are not capable of being intellectual and prosperous. When in fact, since slavery times, blacks have raised and taught whites. But, still, people think that black colleges are not good enough for them. One still has to wonder were these sterotypes come from. My sociology teacher said in one of her lectures that, " every stereotype has some truth behind it." Whatever the case may be, I know one thing, I am proud of my school, and everything it stands for. You do not need to attend Harvard or the University of Alabama to be successful. Stand up for your HBCU!!!!!!'
Amanda Lewis is majoring in Rehabilitation Services. She has made the Dean's List both semesters and holds a 3.5 GPA. Amanda works, cares for her daughter, Aysha, and attends school full-time.
Thank you, Amanda, for representing Alabama State University and for 'standing up for HBCUs'!
Much success to you in motherhood and in your HBCU experience!
