How well do you know the history of America?
Did the British have the right to come to this Native American soil and steal this land to enrich themselves? Do you agree on how this country was founded?

For all i know, WE founded this damn country with our ancesters sweat, hard, work and tears nad i don't believe anything else. Our brown skin and thick thighs made all this possible and one day we'll be on top.

Because we all have a free spirit and free will. Yes they had a right to come and steal this land from it's "Native" inhabitants. Where they morally correct probably not. News flash it has just been unearthed that an african came with christopher columbus as his equal. It also places us here long before slavery began.

Please use this question to inform yourselves, as this is the intent. Since when does free spirit and will give you a RIGHT to steal? your comments seemed very confused about morality, religion, then you state that "were they morally correct PROBABLY ? This amibivalence sort of shows a lack of conviction in what is truth, an attempt to say neutral? take a side.

There were two free Africans who came with Columbus to Hispaniola, one was a navigator and the other a guide, I did not look at your link--but what are you speaking of? what does this have to do with the question? Columbus did not discover America, if in 2009 you as a Black American believe this -, you are still under the teachings of the white man--Please read The Mis-Education of the Negro. Please. I do appreciate your comments and it is here for learning and clarification.

As for the comment that Slaves "founded" America no,they BUILT America.

If they came as "equals" then why is everything named Columbus and not say, Matsimela? And what do you think was here before Columbus came? The Big Bang?

Suppose one day some beings landed here from outer space. They seemed nice enough so, being the relatively friendly people we can be, we hosted them and helped the along. As time went on we noticed more and more of them came. They started to build on land we “owned” and when we protested, they plied us with miscellaneous valuables, but when that didn’t work, they swept us aside. They were able to do so because as it turned out they had superior technology to use as force against us, such that we could not stop them.

Then one day they said they were going to set up camp in the capital, and adorn it with the trappings of their culture. We decided to put the brakes on, but they pushed back. And let’s suppose that, as time went on, more and more of them came, by the tens of thousands, eventually outnumbering us. They began to take over the schools and forced on us their language and culture. Eventually they started changing the names of institutions, changed the rules by which business was done. They decreed that English, Spanish etc. would no longer be spoken, and we needed to be “educated” in their language. And each time we rose up, the response was ever more violent, resulting in wholesale deaths of not just those who rose up, but all in their families.

In the end the renamed the entire country, claimed credit for “discovering” it and restricted the rest of us who survived this onslaught with our lives, to “reservations.” There they let us watch as much TV and listen to as much musi, presenting their content, and do as much drugs and alcohol as we could, to placate us and keep us down.

Would you say these people founded this country? How could they, when we were already here? Would you call this fair? Would you say they had a “right” to do this? You wouldn’t, but this is exactly what happened here in North America. The native peoples here had been here for tens of thousands of years, with their own cultures and governmental structures. We destroyed all of it in the process of stealing the land.

Free spirit and free will does not imply “right.” Free will says that I can see you one day and decide on a whim to beat you within an inch of your life, take what you have and leave you to die. Because I can does not mean its right in any moral or spiritual sense. I don’t even have law on my side, and neither did those who came here to commit the thievery they did.
And Marta’s right; slaves built it but didn’t found anything. They were brought here to do the bidding of the thieves who stole everything out from under the natives.

I feel the British just needed a (trap house) away from their home to do their dirty work!

I'm almost afraid to answer in this blog Marta, but I would have to answer no it was wrong to take over the Native's land. It just never seemed right to me even when my history teachers were attempting to make it more palatable. I had a problem with the history then and I have a real problem with the history of America now. As for your last question, I don't agree with how America was founded. A thief is a thief any way anyone would like to put it.

At this point, it is what it is, and can’t be undone. But the least we can do is demand that history be taught and represented as it actually happened.

From Columbus Day to Custer, we need to set the record straight. We call them “Indians” because the idiot Columbus was not trying to find “the New World” when he bumped his head against these shores. He was tasked with finding a route to the Far East and thought that’s where he was, and since the Natives he came across were dark-skinned, he assumed they were natives of India, hence “Indians.” Yet we celebrate this man with a national holiday, streets, towns and other institutions named after him.

But how can something be considered to be “discovered” by someone when there are people already there? Saying Columbus discovered America is like saying Homer Simpson is real. History as its been taught was from the perspective of white supremacy. All of these situations where we say (insert name of famous explorer) was the first man to discover (insert name of place) should be prefaced with was the first white man to discover… In EVERY case they were not the first to do what they’ve been credited in history of doing, just the first to be recognized and given credit, because they were white!

The real founding fathers of this country were Red Cloud, Sitting Bull, Joseph Nez Perce, Tecumseh, Geronimo, Little Wolf, Cochise, to name a few. The natives were the first environmentalists, who believed that the earth was sacred and found alien the concept of the white man of “owning” land. This is why they had no problem with them coming here, but they did have a problem with them claiming the land as their own.

We can talk about Columbus, but we’re really not talking about American History if we are not talking about Native History.

I don't need to take a side because free will gives you the RIGHT to do what you want. Just as free speech allows you to speak your mind. You know how it works because you just used both on me.

Also my stance is as I wrote it. They were right in they own for taking the land, because of free will. Morally it was not the right thing to do, but for those who believe that this is not morally incorrect will obviously approve of the take over. You want an open discussion I gave it to you. I do apologize if it is not the way that you wanted it. I guess I just used my free will and speech to give you what I wanted.

Elementary american history has always taught that the only black people that came with columbus were slaves. This new discovery rebukes that and gives blacks a higher role in the discovery of america from britains stand point.

As you know blacks were hardly recognized for their discoveries and inventions that created the wealth of this nation. Prior to that those who were on this area of the continent that we possessed were supposed to be wiped out. Their stregnth kept that from happening however it did not prevent the massive take over. Thank you for pointing this out because I guess I really am a fool to have thought that columbus discovered a land that for one didn't have any inhabitants and secondly really was india thus making those who could have been here indians ( a false name that some of us still use to describe those who really didn't discover this land in the first place).

Since there are folks who still ask for my friendship and I get an e-mail alert--I thought I would be nice enough to respond.

I didn't realize that these blog was still here, so let me say this--to Ms. Crystal Smith you can take anthropology 100 in a community college near you and re-educate yourself or you can go read Germs, Guns & Steel---as for spirituality--your age versus mine. We all learn as we mature. Your argument about free will is the ones that Colonists used to control people of color, the ones that were used here to rip your ancestors babies from their mothers, the ones used to cut of our brother's genitals, are you Black? and are you a Republican? or just naive and think you know it all--help me understand? someone will invariably get back to me wth your answer, because I have found a social networking life away from here, wonderful people with real professional attitudes-so nice, not so bytcyhy and argumentative.

Dora--my students weren't afraid and they were between 19-62 years of age!! I wanted you guys to think--thinks about the origins of this nations and the Republican agenda for instance. I am not here to attack anyone, I was always here to share from wealth of experience, a bunch of degrees, world travel and what I do best, ask folks so what do you think--the problem is when someone writes something that shows me they do not know history but they write it with arrogance instead of asking--I do shut them down. I have stupidity. Because there is no excuse. let me give you an example. you can simply google, the question and read through the answers and voila you not only learn by doing that,yu become sophisticated and can discern truth from nonsense. It's a really good question in these times, when I listen to fox radio or spanish radio attack President Obama 24/7 and they don't know what the hell they are talking about!

Bytcyhy sounds like u went to community college and barely passed. I guess u r blacker than all of us which is why u left the site. U r a small minded individual who does not know how to accept truth or see different sides to the truth. Attacking me, my character and my "blackness" is uncalled for. U r one of the main reasons why we cannot resolve the problems of race we have within this nation. I don't know what kind of students u teach but I feel sorry for them. What u think u know is only in rebellion not truth. But u know what u r who u r and thats that. Enjoy ur new site because u find out who is who when the heat is on. Also,If you wanna call me out let me know next time that is if u r mature enough to do that. I'm not hiding I'm still here. "bytcyhy" real classy good thing i don't need u to define who i really am a strong black woman standing on my own and learning and maturing as I need too.

I am rolling with laughter because as an older person all the stories I have heard throughout my life are meshing into a clearer picture. The steady migration out of Africa, the history of denial of dispersed people that they can from Africa. The "we are more civilized, let's go and rip and rape Africa." How the used people market started in America. How America welcomed everybody to come be abused for years before bring accepted. How America keeps blacks remembering the past like an elephant with the chain removed (invisible fence). How diversity includes us and ignores us at the same time. How the internet homogenizes race through search engine blindness. How it is still hard to deal with American life because African sensibilities surface from my core, making me want to fix things, but I can't because I wasn't raised that way. How American blacks entertain on TV and in sports, but the ones from Africa are weepy eyed hungry children, uneducated peasant farmers, machete swingers and gun poppers mindlessly shooting each other. American blacks are the only American citizens who don't go back and forth to the countries of their ancestors. How the image of Africa is kept dark so that American blacks can not draw power from that connection. The official story we are taught in school serves the nation, the republic, it is an altered and twisted tale from a self-serving point of view. How Africans in general have no idea about blacks in America outside of college or business.

President Obama can make a genetic connection to Africa, will he make vital connections, or open vital connections for the rest of us. Don't give us reparations, give us vital connections with our origins. We need to trade stories, moneys, goods and knowledge with the nations of Africa. That would make history.

From what i am learning about myself and my people, we the african americans are the oringnal people of this world not just ameica. see, the "devil" has made the african american community believe that we just got to the world when slavery began, but we just like our native american sister's and brother's we were robbed of all of our riches.

Now that our colleges teach Native-American history we can really get a better understanding of American history as opposed to the histoly version of the conquer which is the norm.

and here is a good one that is left our of the White version of American history...One of the greatest fears of the White man was a Black Indian chief, never saw this in any cow boys and Indian movies, now have you. This is the reason that the Siemnoles(mispelled) in the state of Florida have never been conqured and they were just left alone when they tried to move the Indians from the East to resevations!!!Oh there are lots of goodies why they still try to turn us against even our black churces that teach this thruths of BLACK IN AMERICA. You do not believe that CNN just started teaching us about Black history now have you. How many people of color were on this network before our Black president and now they have us believing they can now teach us about us???P-L-E-A-S-E!!!!!!
