“Everybody gotta have a dream.” - Terrance Howard in Hu$tle & Flow

Welcome to the 8th edition of The Blogger. Hu$tle & Flow review is here! Missy Elliot’s The Cookbook , Cassidy’s I’m A Hustla, and Boyz N Da Hood’s CD reviews are also in. Also, what I think of Southern rappers, Trapped In The Closet, and more.

Hu$tle & Flow was an EXCELLENT movie. The movie had very little flaws, if any. I’m talking about being drawn into the movie from start to finish. However, you are warned. There is a LOT of cussing in the movie, and there is one REAL scene of ******. Other than that, if you’re up for a drama/comedy, check out Hu$tle & Flow. John Singleton did his thing with the movie. This is one of those movies you go to the movies for, buy it from the bootleg man, and then get it on DVD. This will definitely be added into my growing DVD collection. Check it out.

The Cookbook started off nicely. However, it ended terribly. The first 10 songs are good/listenable, with the standout being the single “Lose Control.” The rest of the CD is horrible. Missy keeps changing moods. How do you go from mellow to club song without a skit? What’s wrong with you? That’s basic musicology. Missy did her thing honoring the old skool performers, but her CD isn’t even good enough to be added to a permanent CD collection. It’s one of those “borrow-it-from-your-friends-and-copy” CDs. Three and a half stars.

Cassidy’s CD is fire. I enjoyed the CD. Cassidy seemed to go all out on this CD. One of my fav songs would be “The Message.” That song hit home with a lot of the ideas that I would convey if I was a rapper, which I’m still thinking of pursuing. Cassidy has some killer punchlines on this album as well. The beats are pretty good, and that’s a plus. There were maybe two songs I would’ve skipped through, but I still would listen to them in the end, because Cassidy spits so much fire on all the tracks. However, it’s not as good as I wanted it to be. Therefore, four stars.

Boyz N Da Hood is not much better. Most of their lyrics were repetitive as the theme of the album seems to be don’t mess with them. Come on. There’s a growing Black AIDS population, women that you’re trying to get, cars that you want to buy, people to thank, and all you can really do is do a “don’t mess with me” theme for 90% of the album. Get real. Bad album for their debut. However, some songs saved it from a one and a half star rating. The CD flows pretty smoothly, so that’s a plus. This CD is not worth your time, as it can be dubbed as a crappy version of the NWA. Three and a half stars.

Now, is it me or all of the Southern rappers blowing up now? First, Lil’ Flip got his major deal and did his thing with “Game Over.” Next, Mike Jones came out with the hit “Still Tippin.” No wait...Slim Thug came before him with “3 Kings.” Now, Webbie (AKA Lil’ Webbie) has blown up with “Give Me That,” a song that has been in Louisiana for nearly two years now (it was recently #2 on 106 & Park). So, who’s next in line to step up? The one and only Chamillionaire is next. Then again, Paul Wall is starting to get airplay too. The South is taking over again. As the white dude in Hu$tle & Flow said, “Music is coming back to the South. This is where it all began.” White dude was a funny character. Anyway, make sure you stay on top of the South. And if you didn’t know...Gumbo about to blow up too. Check him out as well.

Man...I finally saw Trapped In The Closet. That is one crazy mini-movie...and he has more coming? Man...what IS next? I guess he gonna go kill the cop or something. But that’s one good mini-movie. I got to see it at “Mama Mo’s” house. Man...R. Kelly did his thing. I thought the whole thing was great, as it kept you on the edge of your seat. However, if you haven’t gotten the album...DON’T GET IT!!! It’s a trick to get you to buy two albums. Think about it. R. Kelly has chapters 1 - 5 on one. You know he is going to “re-master” the songs and put 1 - 10 on a whole CD. Be patient with everything. The newer version is coming...soon. He has to finish it before he goes to jail...I mean, to trial.

Last bit, I got a chance to meet Elise Neal. In case you don’t know, she’s the woman from The Hughleys who played D.L.’s wife. Man...she is FINE in person. She’s also a lot shorter than I thought she was. But she was very nice, and answered all of our questions (it was a roundtable interview with two other journalists). She always had a smile on...and she could smile. You can check out my page for a pic of me and her (we’re separated by a poster...darn it). But she’s a very sweet person, should you ever have a chance to meet her.

Well...I’m about to get out of here. Thanks to everyone that helped through my hard time. All your advice is very much appreciated! Let’s see…if you want to know what I think of the bombs in London, check out my blog called "It’s All Bush’s Fault” for that. Big ups to Bobby Abreu who shattered the Home Run Derby’s record with 41. I didn’t comment on it, because I didn’t even watch it. I think that’s it. As always, love, peace, and SOOOOOOOUUUUUULLL!!!

I think you were waaaay too hash on Missy Elliott's album 'The Cookbook'. The beats are hot and the her flow and lyrics are witty. I’ll even give example if you want...
