Merck announced that it will renew its support of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) over the next five years with a grant of $13 million. The funding will continue to support efforts to expand the pool of black scientists in the United States.
The 37 recipients, known as the UNCF-Merck Fellows, are black students pursuing careers in scientific research. A total of 371 awards total have been given to accomplished young biomedical-research scientists.
The UNCF-Merck Science Initiative was first announced in July 1995, with a 10-year, $20-million grant from The Merck Company Foundation and Merck Research Laboratories to UNCF. Over 10 years, scholarships and fellowships have been provided to science students at the undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral levels, with financial support, hands-on training, close mentoring relationships and institutional support.
On each level, the competition is open to black students at all four-year colleges and universities in the United States.
Each fellow is paired with a mentor Merck scientist to gain valuable research assistance, guidance and other types of support.

HBCUs represent only 3 percent of all colleges and universities, yet they enroll 16 percent of all blacks in four-year degree-granting institutions, according to NAFEO.
NAFEO and the Educational Testing Service (ETS) will conduct a number of case studies for retaining and graduating HBCU students. NAFEO will work with its members, historically and predominately black colleges and universities, to replicate the promising and best practices.
